Bill: Food Awareness Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Fair and Equal World Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 2532

Description[?]:

Rutania's current laws state that "There is no requirement to disclose Gentically Modified ingredients, or chemicals used in agrigulture or processing." But we believe the people of Rutania are entitled to know exactly what kind of food they're eating, and what went into making it.

Whether GM ingredients and chemicals are harmful or not is besides the point. We can't assume that the public doesn't care what's in their food. The food we eat affects our personal health, and we should be able to make conscious decisions regarding our health.

I offer this bill in the interest of full disclosure to Rutania's citizens.

MessageThis legislation would have detrimental effects on the Arigucultural Industry's welfare, and quite frankly opens the doors to more intrusive government regulation. The OEF opposes this legislation.

MessageFurthermore, an opinion poll of Rutanian citizens dated 2526 shows that the majority of the people are against such regulation.

MessageWould the Organization for Economic Freedom consent to a bill which would require listing of only GM ingredients, or only chemicals, instead of both?

MessageJust because listing of ingredients are not compulsory, companies will still do it as it gives consumers information and allows those with allergies to not be able to sue the firm for ingredients in the product that they didn't know about.

MessageIf a food company is so big that it doesn't care about a lawsuit, what happens to them? There needs to be some kind of consequence for these giant corporations, so that they can't just brush off the odd allergic customer as irrelevant to their huge stockpile of wealth.

MessageAfter examining more of Rutania's current laws, we found this one concerning video games:

"The government does not maintain laws as to age limitation for purchasing video games, although it does require a content rating to be clearly displayed on the box."

If the government requires a content rating on video game boxes, then it should require a content rating on food boxes. After all, what we eat is just as important, maybe even more important, than the video games we play.
