Bill: Privatisation of Radio Aldegar Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Ducal Delegation
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: June 2111
Description[?]:
The government-owned Radio Aldegar was created in an era when nobody had televisions and Radio Aldegar was the only radio station. It served our nation a great purpose in ensuring that everybody got to hear the news. However, in the modern age - where we have a wide variety of radio stations and television channels - a government-owned radio station is no longer necessary. Freed from the shackles of government-control, Radio Aldegar would be ready to make its own way in the business as a privately-owned radio station. I would like to add that we have no plans to propose privatising Aldegar's national television station, as we believe it has a role to play as a public broadcaster. The days of government-controlled radio stations, however, must surely be at an end... Adrian Walters (Minister for Economic Affairs) |

Message | We do not agree. Your logic - privatizing all radio but not all television - is inconsistent. Pure market forces cannot alone provide us with impartial, high-quality news and culture. Most of our radio in Aldegar is already private, but the government subsidizes a station for educational and informational purposes. If you privatize it, there is no guarantee that this level of service will be maintained or that the same quality will be maintained, or that it will remain free. It might become a fee-paying or advertising-ridden service or its content might be distorted by market pressures. |

Message | The PLP believes that maintaining one station in all mediums is appropriate, and we will therefore not support the call to privatise the single public-owned radio station. |

Message | A stste owned public service broadcaster is still needed to produce those programmes which may not be profitable but will enrich the intellectual and cultural life of the people. We oppose this bill. |

Message | We feel that channels like this are nothing but sources for propoganda anyway, but even so, the peoples money could be spent more effectively on other things. Whats more important, knowing your way around the capital of Quanzar, or having your crucial operation exactly when you need it? |

Message | A nationalized station isn't necessarily a propaganda station. The BBC, for example, clearly tries to be impartial. A private station can sometimes be more biased than a public one, because private stations have pressure from advertisers and from their rich proprietors. Public stations can be protected from state pressure if the law is well drafted and if the institution is built up with the correct culture of public service. |

Message | Well said FBSP! Look at the Fox network in the US if you need an example of a biased privately owned broadcaster! |

Message | Thanks! Vote FBSP at the next election and this legislation will be repealed, renationalizing our public-service radio :) |
