Bill: Income tax proposal of December 2551

Details

Submitted by[?]: Union Hosienne-Démocrate (UHD)

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill proposes to change income taxes. It requires more than half of the legislature to vote yes. This bill will pass as soon as the required yes votes are in, or will be defeated if unsufficient votes are reached on the deadline.

Voting deadline: August 2552

Description[?]:

The Union Conservatrice des Gaullistes propose to adjust the government's income tax policy to better address the economic situation of the État Libre de Kanjor.

We have proposed a cut 1/5 of the percentage from all current tax brackets. This would collect 109,961,000,000 KRP in direct income taxes from Kanjorans. Current federal government expenses are at 275,000,255,000 KRP per fiscal year. This would create a 38,477,243,999 KRP surplus; all things being equal of course.

We also feel it may be beneficial to lower corporate taxes down from the heavy 32% it is currently at.

The UCG would also like to propose an increase in the money provided to the current budget, but would, however, like input from the Triumvirate as well as the non-Governmental and Opposition parties before proposing anything.

MessageI ask everyone to look at the current system before voting on this. The UCG's proposal has left the current bracket system the same, so it is easy to compare. This is what the UCG wants:

>90k: decreased 11%
>75k: decreased 9%
>60k: decreased 7%
>45k: decreased 5%
>30k: decreased 3%
>15k: decreased 1%

The UCG wants to cut taxes for the outrageously rich by 11%. The UCG wants to cut taxes for the poorest income tax-paying segment by only 1%.

The UCG wants to give the richest bracket the most money. It wants to give the poorest bracket the least.

All I want to know is, who thought up the idea of letting the corporate fascists get their grubby hands on Kanjor's progressive tax system?

MessageUmm, we cut taxes by 1/5 for all brackets. If you did the goddamn math you would realize that we have a huge surplus. We make more than 65 billion rupees, WE DON't REALLY NEED ANYMORE MONEY!

Let's think about this: Old system was "poor pay 5%, rich pay 55%; 11 times more." Current system: "Poor pay 4%, rich pay 44%; 11 times more." They're the same.

So, if you have all the fuckin' answers (that doesn't include taxing the nation to death when we don't need to) than you come up with a new tax system. No one's touched it in years, we've been running a surplus for decades. Hell, we bet we could eliminate taxes, and just run the nation off of our saving's interest for many years.

MessageWe shouldn't be thinking of tax cuts when most government services are well underfunded.

MessageWe have a 65 billion rupee surplus, that's 65 billion we can use. This proposal, is lessening the surplus to roughly 30 billion; which still leaves 30 billion to be used. What do you wish to see an increase of funding in, and by how much?

MessageCurrently just 11.95% of our GDP is spent by the government. Slightly over one third (say 4%) of this is spent on Education and Health and Social Services. Yet with this free public health care exists, free pharmaceutical drugs are provided, sports clubs are funded, a system of universities, vocational schools, and colleges nationwide exist, a free public education system exists, a public radio and television medium exists for educational purposes, child benefit is provided to low income and large families, all adults not supported by another are guarenteed a reasonable standard of living and a public pension exists.

There is no way that such a thorough welfare state can be paid for and sustained with 4% of the GDP unless it is underfunded.

Ooc: In the UK, which has a similar welfare set up to Kanjor (I think), spends something like 39% of its GDP, of which 58% is spent on Health, Education and ‘Social Protection’ (like 22% of its total GDP)

MessageYou've got to be fucking kidding me. I had no idea that the BL and PL would just jump at the first tax-lowering shit they saw even if it's the most plainly inequitable proposal ever created.

MessageAfter increased pressure from General Antoine Boisclair's Ministry of Defense given the recent estimate of several military modernization projects in the works along with pressure from Anne-Marie Boisclair's militarist, economically centre-left wing, we will have to switch our vote on the income tax proposal. We can use the surplus for strengthening the defense of the Free State and advancing new prospects with our space program.
