Bill: Nuclear Decommissioning Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Union of Work-Shy Elements

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2111

Description[?]:

For the Kundrati Union to be dependent on nuclear technology for the purpose of energy generation is shameful enough but for the government to protect and encourage the nuclear business is far beyond shameful.

All parties are familiar with the usual arguments made for and against nuclear technology but surely the most compelling is the eternal problem of radioactive waste with which we will burden future generations.

The passing of this bill will implement a responsible energy policy incorporating ambitious targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. But above all a non-nuclear energy policy that promotes renewables, an energy efficiency strategy, and support for the research and development of clean technologies.

MessageWe could never support a complete ban on nuclear power. It should always be an option, otherwise we may be limiting ourselves to a less efficient form of power. However, there are more immidiate concerns than this!

I suppose the government expects the existing nuclear power plants to just magically convernt some other fuel into energy? Power plants costs billions of dollars and require many years to plan and build. New plants are not nearly as easy to construct as this piece of legislation is to pass. This bill does not just ban an abstract policy of reliance on nuclear power--it bans a large potion of our existing infrastructure!

We don't belive this bill even begins to take reality into account. We predict massive power outages once our nation's existing infrastructure is deemed illegal. This is absurd, and no responsible Senator should support such a ban. A more reasonable proposal should be made.

MessageWe refer you to the discussion we had when the current law was implemented. Nuclear waste is not the threat it is made out to be, and can be neutralized fairly easily. (Dilute with molten glass until acceptable radiation levels are reached, then form the glass into balls or orhterwise harmless shapes and dump them some place safe - like the bottom of the ocean. The glass is chemically inert and no more radioactive than its surroundings.) Renewable energy sources like wind, water and solar are currently not nearly efficient enough to replace traditional energy sources. Nuclear energy is more or less a necessity. Its dangers are greatly overestimated thanks to outdated research and equally outdated legal measures.

Also please note that the Kundrati government is still stimulating research into renewable energy sources; they are currently not a realistic solution though. Nuclear energy is.

MessageI agree with 1 but not with 2. Although I don't think we should encourage nuclear power, I don't want an outright ban

Messagethe risks are small, very small in this day and age, that somthing could go wrong, it produces much more energy than conventional fossil fuels, and is infanitly more clean.
