MessageWe do not support this act because we believe that the death penalty is a vital asset in deterring future crime.

MessageWhilst the argument that to deprive a person of their life for a crime which they may, in fact, not have committed is a valid one, is it any more humane to incarcerate them for twenty-odd years on the same pretext?

On the subject of curfews, the Vanuku Sinatranoan Party has no firm views, but requires a little more reason for the proposed change than: "An act to reform the criminal justice code". What practical reforms are you offering? Please provide some details. Lay down firm policy, not populist ramblings.

MessageCurrent policy on curfews is unnecessarily oppressive and for that reason must be amended. Our proposed reforms will allow for curfews only in a state of emergency as declared by the national government. This way we respect the freedoms of individuals to move freely and exercise their business as they so wish except in those extreme circumstances where national security requires otherwise.

As for the death penalty; it is our firm belief that the current policy of allowing the death penalty for capital offences is over expensive and based upon unfounded sociological theories. The argument that capital punishment deters crime is completely unfounded and unsupported by any credible research into the issue. Not only that but the costs of repeated appeals and maintainence of capital punishment facilities far outweighs any possible benefits it might have. A system of mandatory life sentencing for capital offences will be far more effective and cost efficient not to mention far more humane.

MessageWe look at the death penalty this way: A bullet and a gun cost far less than the tax payers paying for a criminal to sit in jail for 20 some odd years. As to whether the death penalty is humane or not: If you are convicted of a capital crime and are sentence to death, you no longer have any rights, especially if the convicted person has been found guilty of murder.

MessageRegarding your comment that the current policy on curfews are excessive, do you know how many of the five states in Vanuku actually currently enforce any sort of a curfew?

Thought not.

MessageMind you, at least we've had a bit of fairly constructive debate on the death penalty. The Vanuku Sinatranoan Party actually had an internal conscience vote on this issue, and was almost divided 50/50.

Truly there are no easy answers.

Random fact: It is possible for a player to transfer ownership of a character or a royal house to another player. This should be done in a public way, such as on the Character Transfers thread, so that if a dispute arises in the future, Moderation can be pointed towards evidence of the transfer.
