Description[?]:
This is the last bill introduced under the leadership of Msgr Romero: Cigarettes are a leading cause of death among both smokers and non-smokers exposed to second-hand toxins. For the sake of our national health, and the health of our children, these suicide devices should be outlawed. In year one, a special 200% tobacco tax will be imposed, and all forms of tobacco advertising banned. The new tax income will permit free stop-smoking counselling for all smokers who choose to undertake it, free nicotine patches, and similar quitting aids. In year two, cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and other forms of addictive nicotine death devices will be banned from sale in Lodamun. In year three, the use of tobacco products will be outlawed. However, no one may be sent to prison for using tobacco. |

Debate
These messages have been posted to debate on this bill:

Message | Opposed. We would support increasing tobacco taxes and banning tobacco advertising, as well as trying to wean people off cigarettes, but outright banning them will not accomplish anything. |
Date | 20:37:57, September 16, 2005 CET | From | Royal Conservative Party | To | Debating the Ban cancerous death sticks |
Message | Supported, cigarettes are a curse on society. I object to our tax money being used to pay for operations and beds for those unable to control their irresponsible habits. The dangers of second hand cigarette smoke are well documented and we find it morally inexcusable for the government to allow people to damage the health and well being of others simply because they are unable to control their addicition. ((OOC: interesting fact, a recent survey in Britain said about 3 out of 10 smokers asked permission before lighting up)) |

Message | Opposed, though we would support measures to prevent "tax money being used to pay for operations and beds for " smokers. |

Message | Let's send this up for inevitable defeat. |
Date | 20:40:16, September 17, 2005 CET | From | Democractic Socialist Party of Lodamun | To | Debating the Ban cancerous death sticks |
Message | Since when has banning drug use ever prevented their use? It's a nice thought, but it won't work. |

Message | "Since when has banning drug use ever prevented their use? It's a nice thought, but it won't work." The same applies to guns, why does DSP support gun control? |

Random fact: "OOC", "IC" and "IG" are commonly-used acronyms in Particracy. "OOC" refers to comments, discussions and actions which are out-of-character, meaning they are done player-to-player rather than party-to-party. "IC" refers to in-character interactions (ie. party-to-party). Similarly, "IG" means in-game, although this term may also simply refer to what happens in the actual game interface, as opposed to on the forum or elsewhere. "RP" just means "role-play". |
