Message | We understand that a major seat reduction such as that proposed by the LPP several years ago lacks the support to pass. We maintain the necessity for the eventual reduction below this level, but we would ask the house to support this as a necessary step. |

Message | Very strongly opposed. There's nothing magical about the number 717, but: it's nice that it's near the high end of the range, to allow finer gradations in support to be shown (ever viewed pictures on the web with a monitor that shows only 256 colors, or worse 16 colors?) ... it's an odd number to prevent ties (although so is 599, so this particular point doesn't matter) ... it's a little less depressing for a relatively small party like ours to see that we hold 74 seats, instead of being knocked back to a lower number as this proposal would cause; even though the actual percentage of the legislature would physically be the same, it would just feel smaller ... Kirlawa is one of the most populous countries, so it makes sense that we have a larger legislature than most others -- Lourenne has 2/5 of our population and currently 303 seats; Talmoria, 2/5 of our population and currently 500 seats; Valruzia, 3/4 of our population and currently 450 seats; Istalia, 3/4 of our population and currently 599 seats; Sekowo, 3/4 of our population and currently 600 seats; our neighbors Dorvik, 3/4 of our population and currently 499 seats; our other neighbors Aloria, 3/4 of our population and currently 750 seats. Why should the people of these countries be better-represented than ours? ... and, most importantly, we've had it at 717 for over a century now, and maintaining it at this figure allows current and future party sizes to continue to be very easily compared with past ones, by simply directly comparing the number of seats, instead of needing to each and every time either manually perform the arithmetic or look it up in each party's table of percentages. |
