MessageOkay I'm against. Whilst commercial overfishing may be a problem I do not believe that regulation would make this problem any better. I feel that the quota's would probably harm smaller fishing companies and independent fisherman more than the larger corporations. I would rather see all Rutanian fisherman be given an equal playing field thus I continue to feel that a lack of government interference will help to maintain an equality in this industry.

MessageWhereas if there are no quotas ALL fishing companies will go out of businesses when we run out of fish. That's hardly going to help the economy.

MessageIs anyone going to try to counter the argument that this, in the long run, protects fish stocks? As has been demonstrated in the UK and in Canada, if left to its own devices the fishing industry tends to fish entire areas dry (no pun intended) and the end result is that THOUSANDS of people lose their jobs in the end, just so that they can make more money in the short term.

MessageModern Democrats think it is more appropriate to let the market govern this situation; thus will not support regulatory action.

MessageThe market has demonstrated its love of short termism again and again in this area. Regulatory action must be taken, just as we impose health and safety regulations.
