Message | We fail to understand why reducing the ability for women to choose to have abortions will improve choice or improvements in healthcare, rather it will lead to an increase in "back alley" abortions. We also fail to understand how reducing contraceptive availability will improve health as it will increase the risks of STD infections and increase the number of unwanted pregnancies, which linked with article 1 will increase pressure on the health service. Moreover, removing the safety net of regulations from private clinics will increase the risks to public health as there is likely to be a reduction in cross infection procedures in order to cut costs and increase profits for the private companies. All of this coupled with the removal of funding for public sports clubs which play a vital role in maintaining the fitness of deprived areas and so improving general health makes this bill do the exact opposite of what it intends, reducing the general welfare and health of this nation whilst placing increased risks to infection transmission. |

Message | IC: We are making these proposals for the following reasons: Article One: We are supporting the reducing of the abortion window from two trimesters to one based on research that shows considerable development of the fetus during that time period. We believe that during the second trimester, the fetus's nervous system has developed to the point where it can feel pain, thus making abortions an inhumane procedure. Additionally, we believe that even though the window for getting an abortion is being halved, it will not significantly impede a woman's decision to have the procedure performed, as the vast majority of women become aware of the fact they are pregnant well before the 12 week deadline that this bill proposes. Article Two: The CNP believes that a person's need for contraceptives is largely based around a choice of lifestyle, and that lifestyle should not be simply payed for by the government. While we recognize the importance of making contraceptives affordable to everyone, we believe that the people who use them should have to pay part of the cost for their choice. Article Three: With a public healthcare system already in place, we find it totally unnecessary to so heavily regulate the few private institutions still remaining. We therefore call for the lifting of these cumbersome regulations placed on the private healthcare establishments in our country. Article Four: We believe that sports clubs are completely nonessential for the functioning of our society. Therefore, we propose to reduce costs by taking the government out of that particular industry, and completely privatizing it. |

Message | Firstly might we make it clear that, although we disagree with the CNP we do understand the position from which they are introducing this change to the legislation. However: Article 1: Until week 20, which is mid-way through the second tri-mester, the zygote is little more than an over developed growth within the womans body. It is incapable of self survival and as such is merely a drain on a womans life. After that date, the zygote has reached a point where its respiratory system is functional and so can survive. As for the ability to feel pain, there is little evidence to prove this and it is the position of the WSS!P that until such time that the creature is capable of active cognitive function it is little more than a growth feeding from the woman, albeit a living growth. Article 2: Whilst we accept that a persons use of contraceptives is based around lifestyle we recognise that the primary duty of any government should be the protection of the people as a whole and any way of stopping the spread of highly infectious diseases should be utilised. We do, however, accept that this article is of comparatively little concern and would, given the right circumstances, support such a position. Article 3: The regulations on the private institutions are there for the protection of the public at large and the medical staff who work for the private companies. The private institutions come under the same regulations as the public system but are also free to offer treatments that the public system does not and it is that freedom which the private healthcare institutions should compete rather than by removing the regulations that guarantee the safety of the staff and patients. Article 4: Sports clubs are necessary in maintaining the health of our citizenry. By providing these clubs we provide our citizens with basic facilities where they can not only maintain a healthy body, and so reducing the money required by the health service, but also a healthy mind and cohesive society by allowing people to socialise. They are also extremely important for the young and less well off in our society who otherwise can't afford private sports clubs and so would lose out on both the health and social aspects of the clubs whilst also leading to possible increases in criminal activity due to a loss of activities available to the young. |
