Bill: Constitutional Reform Act!
Details
Submitted by[?]: Telamon National Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: May 2580
Description[?]:
Article 4: The Name to be changed from ' Republic of Telamon' to 'United Commonwealth of Telamon'. We feel that having an elected president which is a lame duck and holds no real power is pointless and a waste of money and resources. We feel that by establishing a monarchy our head of state will be able to build up a good long term relationship with other countries without the influence of political background. Also this would increase tourism to our great nation as there is a huge world market for Monarchy Tourism. |

Message | Apparantly the party leadership of the TNP is either shamefully obtuse or has a rather distasteful sense of humor. James Lott Chairman Democratic Capitalist Delegation |

Message | Telamon is a Republic and a land of free people, and that should be reflected in the HOS position. The DCD supports representative democracy and liberty, we will never support a monarchy of any kind. Scrap this proposal or send it to vote, but we would advise you that the support to implement your back-tracking proposals does not likely exist. James Lott Chairman Democratic Capitalist Delegation |

Message | Debate is healthy and by having debate it could help us win vital support. Democracy is only good if what you are electing has some sort of power, the president is a lame duck and is pointless. Therefor a lame duck is better to be a permanent figure for the reasons we have stated above. |

Message | The President currently has the authority to propose a cabinet, and so has authority in our dealings with foreign countries. The claim that a monarch would not be influenced by political background or motivation is plainly and clearly false, as he would obviously lean towards the political bias of the party he derives from. We believe that changing our approach to foreign relations from time to time is healthy, much the way that a good debate and exchange of opinions is healthy. We have no reason to believe that an occasional change to the HOS will have great impact on foreign affairs, especially granted the fact that in Telamon the Foreign Affairs ministry and the Prime Minister do most of the dealing with foreign countries. Message | Proposing a Cabinet is hardly a real power, and could be seen as being anti-democratic as it could keep in government which would be kicked out if a different cabinet was proposed. We see that situation now where a TNP cabinet is unable to be proposed when we feel that we could win a vote on a new cabinet. If a leader comes from a party that has policies which have acted against a group that has a leader in a different country relations between them 2 leaders could seriously be tense. A Capitalist could possibly find it difficult to work with a Communist and so on, however with the Monarchy we have a person who is not representing any one party or ideology but the nation and its people. |

Message | Can't Telamon be a Commonwealth without being a Monarchy? Thats how it was for the first 400 or so years of Telamons history! Damn communists with all of your sexually transmitted diseases and republicanism!!!!! |

Message | The TNP has been a member of the International Monarchist League since it founding. The TNP is not doing this just to get in a cabinet. |

Message | The HRP is unable to come to a decision on this particular issue at the moment. We will listen to the arguments and then make our decision. |
Date | 22:50:11, May 20, 2008 CET | From | Telamon Minarchist Party | To | Debating the Constitutional Reform Act! |
Message | We could see phasing out the HoS poisition and combining it with the HoG possibly, but to create a monarchy makes no sense as it would only produce huge amounts of both infighting and actual violence over the selection of a monarch. All in all a terrible proposal and we'll vote against this bill. Leonard Nozick Party Leader Telamon Minarchist Party |
Date | 01:13:37, May 21, 2008 CET | From | Telamon National Party | To | Debating the Constitutional Reform Act! |
Message | We have former monarchy still residing in Telamon, and a Monarch would be helpful to international relations and also the nations tourism. |
Date | 04:59:31, May 21, 2008 CET | From | Humanic Republicanist Party | To | Debating the Constitutional Reform Act! |
Message | The HRP would like to see some evidence backing up the claims that a monarchy will improve tourism. As it is, Macon is a very cold region and tourism is extremely low on our income source. There are monarchies on Terra that are in warmer regions which make them much more likely to receive tourism money. |
Date | 05:10:50, May 21, 2008 CET | From | Democratic Capitalist Delegation | To | Debating the Constitutional Reform Act! |
Message | We see the same arguments being made over and over again by the TNP even after counterpoints have been made by 3 different parties. It is apparent that this approach, traditional or not, is not right for modern day Telamon. We don't buy the argument that it will improve foreign affairs for reasons already stated, and we see no reason to feel obligated to empower a monarch simply because it was the way of Telamon in the past. We are a forward moving nation with a proud history, but it is exactly that: history. James Lott Chairman Democratic Capitalist Delegation |
Date | 13:10:57, May 21, 2008 CET | From | Telamon National Party | To | Debating the Constitutional Reform Act! |
Message | People travel to countries just to see their Monarchs carry out thier business. As for the foreign affairs, we feel that the people of Telamon and the nations of terra will feel that a politically independent person such as a monarch is more trustworthy to get the best possible solutions to issues with other governments and HoS. We would also not have all the messing around and cost of holding elections for the HoS every so often, our civil servants and political parties could focus on the parliamentary elections. |

Message | We would support all of this bill, but we are going to seek a later change from the title Monarch, to the title King. |
Date | 17:32:22, May 22, 2008 CET | From | Social Democratic Party | To | Debating the Constitutional Reform Act! |
Message | We will* support this bill. |

Message | We now see that there is a majority, but not enough of it. Citizens want changes, lets give them to them! Vojislav Krkljus Chairman of the RRP |
