MessageThis bill will allow mayors to be elected instead of appointed. I believe that the people have a right to choose their own local government, and thus this bill should be passed to increase local political freedoms.

MessageMr Speaker,

Popularity contests encourage a cult of personality that detracts from the real issues the parties stand for. That's why the people should elect councillors who, between themselves, choose a leader to be mayor, just as we choose the Head of Government in cabinet proposals.

Having a separate election just for the mayor is also a pointless waste of taxpayers money. Let's spend it on defence instead.

I yield the floor.

MessageSir,

I believe the taxpayers would prefer to have their money spent on more political freedoms, rather than weapons that we already seem to have plenty of. It is in the interests of the people to have more rights, not more guns. Defense is great, don't take this the wrong way, but the level of defence we are currently at is completely adequate.

MessageMr Speaker,

What will our honoured guest suggest next: directly electing the Prime Minister or even the Empress?

MessageSir,

No, of course not. That would be nonsense. Allowing the direct elections of local governments will quench the citizens' thirst for democracy. Such urges can only be contained for so long, so it is better to satisfy the people rather than risk an unsatisfied population. I cannot understand why a movement toward increased compromise with pro-election groups is not supported by more.
