MessageWe don't need to regulate pre-schools. If parents want a regulated one, they can go to a state pre-school. If they want unregulated, they can to a private one. That way, the parents have choice.

MessageNo. Nobody wants overregulation, but we believe private nurseries have to be regulated up to a certain point. There are certain minimum standards which should be fullfilled, at least for the safety of the children: eg no dirty unhealthy environment, kids cannot be left unsupervised, no dogs in the vicinity of toddlers, or a dangerous staircases or fish pond which isn't properly sealed off..

MessageDo you think parents would allow their children to attend such a nursery? Parents of children that age of manically obsessive about the smallest possible risk, they are much more demanding than the government could ever be.

MessageParents do not have the time or legal authority to impose vigorous inspections upon nurseries.

MessageIf parents don't want to investigate private nurseries, they can take their child to a state nursery, which they can be sure conforms to governmental guidelines.

MessageIt\'s not always easy/possible to find out how competent a nanny is, or to check what a nanny actually does all day. \r\nSome examples:

* One story comes to mind.. A nanny called the father of a baby saying "your kid is turning blue, I dunno what to do, what should I do?". In stead performing cpr, or (if she doesn\'t know first aid) calling 911, the father had to drive like crazy to the nursery,.. too late, the baby had suffocated in it\'s own vomit. People who lack the knowledge, skills, who aren\'t qualified to do the job, should not do the job.

* I heard about a nursery once where a parent coincidentally came to get his/her toddler earlier, and the daughter/son of the nanny (still a small kid themselves) opened the door, saying "mammy is sleeping". This is not taking care of kids! Parents were actually paying her to look after their children, trusting her, while she did nothing. And there are numerous other stories where a parent asks at the end of the day "how was my kid today" the answer is always "fine", even if you can see at his/her eyes he/she must have been crying all day.

Also, there are not always alternatives available.. in some regions you almost have to book a place at a daycare as soon as you know you\'re pregnant.

MessageAgain, no amount of government regulation is going to be able to guarantee that people do their jobs effectively. Some people are just wholly incapable.
