Message | Thats a pretty radical defence increase, are our armed forces really on the verge of almost tripling in size? The threat from certain quarters in't even a confirmed threat yet. |
Date | 20:28:02, October 20, 2008 CET | From | Telamon National Party | To | Debating the Budget proposal of October 2654 |
Message | We feel that we should have the best armed forces in the world and currently that is not possible with such a small budget. Also the nations that currently pose a threat have a much bigger budget than us, will we be able to win a war against a better armed military? The TNP has always been dedicated to a strong defence and we are now taking this huge leap at a time we feel it is vital. John Walker, Finance Minister. |
Date | 11:00:07, October 21, 2008 CET | From | Democratic Capitalist Delegation | To | Debating the Budget proposal of October 2654 |
Message | The TNP has neglected to consider, deliberately or otherwise, the currency exchange rate. The Telamonian Pound is one of the strongest currencies in Terra, so claims that our defense spending is dwarfed by many other nations are misleading. Also, the TNP makes reference to "nations that currently pose a threat..." when there are in fact no nations in Terra which currently threaten Telamon or even have poor relations with Telamon. The digustingly bloated budget of this government does not need an increase in wasteful spending, but rather needs serious budget cuts. Telamon does not need to be a nation dedicated to dominant military spending, but rather maintain a sufficient defensive force and dedicate time to friendly foreign relations and frequent international outreach in order to secure its safety. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Parliament, what you are seeing here is the Telamon National Party attempting to capitalize on the slightest indication of animosity, no matter how harmless the source, to turn this country into a wasteful disposer of tax dollars, the financing of which will make this government an unbearable burden on the shoulders of our citizens, driving down the standard of living. Where do they propose to waste the vast majority of this extra money they are gouging from the citizenry? They don't want to better fund our infrastructure, offering us better road, or power lines, or greater internet access. They don't want to fund our sciences, keeping Telamon on the cutting edge, making sure our lives are constantly improving. They don't want to fund our environment, ensuring that our air stays clean and our water drinkable. No ladies and gentlemen, they want to make us a police state, increasing military spending by 20 billion TPD. Let me say that again. 20 BILLION TPD. We aren't talking about simply defending ourselves, we're talking about building up for a massive military offensive with that kind of an increase. On top of that, the TNP is proposing a 1 billion TPD bonus for the President's salary. That would be an infuriating waste of the taxpayers' hard earned dollars. This budget proposal is a travesty, and we hope the people riot in the streets if it passes. Allegra Cabrazi Chairwoman Democratic Capitalist Delegation |
