Message | A difficult one, but: (a) the notion of free contraceptives in public toilets seems to us extreme. (b) we currently means-test other pharmaceutical products (i.e. we provide medicines free to the poor, but make others pay) - and FBSP thinks medicines should be free to all, but only on prescription, not in public places! - so it's illogical not to apply the means-test to contraceptives. (c) we believe a considerable subsidy is adequate - we don't think that completely free contraceptives are generally necessary to address the public health problem. We do believe that pharmacies should be able to, at their discretion, offer free contraceptives. But the current law seems to go too far. |

Message | We believe that contraceptives should remain free. Contraceptives may or may not be pharmaceuticals and may are certainly helping to reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections as well as pregnancies. The provision of free contraceptives will also allow the state to reduce the umber of unwanted pregnancies and thus the human and social cost associated with this. |

Message | To the PLP - why do you support free contraceptives and yet you oppose free medicines? For us, the opposite is more logical. We would prefer contraceptives to remain free under certain circumstances, but we don't see why they should be given out for free in toilets. We support free pharmaceuticals but only on prescription. |
