Bill: Responsible Religious Leaders Act 2122
Details
Submitted by[?]: Totalitarian Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: August 2123
Description[?]:
Religious leaders can be influential. Many people will follow a particularly charismatic leader, especially if they believe his word is the word of God. This is not a bad thing. Many religious leaders urge their followers to do good, to help their fellow citizens and lead healthy lives. But there are some leaders who influence their followers to do wrong. They urge the faithful to discriminate against certain groups, religious and secular. They condone violence and other wrong-doings towards citizens who do not believe in their God, or go against the principles of their religion. They force their opinions of morality on people, telling them that contraception is wrong, or stem-cell research is against God. We believe that it is the State's duty to keep these people from becoming ministers of religion. We propose the government be given the right to select candidates for the position of minister. The religious community selects one of these citizens for the position. |

Message | And who is to judge what is a fanatic? Any views are legal until they commit a crime. Once they commit a crime, they can become prosecutable. |

Message | The government is the judge of what is a fanatic. Additionally, prevention of crime is far superior to a cure. |

Message | A fanatic is anyone who is willing to fight for what he believes in, using violence and harming law-abiding citizens, merely because they follow a different religion, or are of a different race. He will not personally fight, though. He will encourage his followers to shun the people he hates, causing a rift between the groups that will escalate into violence. We do not want to oppress religion with this legislation. We want to make Gaduridos safer for all citizens. The problem with prosecuting the ministers after they have committed a crime is that they usually do not commit any crime themselves. They give hate-filled speeches, causing followers to attack those the minister is against. Our laws allow them to publish propaganda filled with hate speech. We must protect our nation's citizens from these people. |

Message | Giving hate filled speeches is perfectly legal under our system. They have a right to do this. The people who commit the crime should be arrested. Also conspiring to commit crimes is illegal, so if they lead crimes they can be prosecuted. It is not worth the cost of the civil liberties that will be sacrificed to do this. We will vote no. |

Message | Religions are still given some freedom regarding their choice of minister. We feel the proposed change is fair. Some liberty sacrificed for increased safety for our nation's citizens. I feel further debate is unnecessary. Moving to vote. |
