Message | Mr. Speaker, This will cause people to stop purchasing luxury items, which will end up hurting the economy. We must also realize that none of the parties seemed to have trouble before, when we taxed income (the most essential item). We should treat all purchases the same. We must keep a flat rate so that the tax code stays simple. If we have different percentages, the consumer will have trouble shopping. If they decide to go to the grocery store to buy some food (essential) but would like to pick up some magazines as well (luxury), they will have trouble calculating the costs of their purchases. And then we get into the trouble of what items become luxury and not. Where do we draw the line? Do dessert foods become luxury or essential? What about the pop you have with your meal? Can you imagine the confusion that would be created even when doing something as simple as going out to eat? Mr. Speaker, we simple cannot support an act that will deter good economic behaviour while creating complexity and loopholes in the tax code. I yield the floor. |

Message | Mr. Speaker; Did the SCSC include a factor of decreased spending? There will be a decay with the increase of taxes. |
