Description[?]:

There are two kinds of titles used by Rildanorian nobles, some are personal ranks, others are titles linked to the fiefs owned, called fiefs de dignité. All titles and ranks can be granted and revoked by the monarch.

TITLES (all granted by the monarch and in order of rank; no political power or land are necessarily attached)

1. Prince: each canton is a principality with a prince, which is a title that can only be used by relatives of the monarch. The Prince(ss) of Tiralouse is normally reserved for the heir apparent to the throne.
2. Duc: possessor of a duchy (duché). The four largest cities of each canton/territory is a duchy and is normally a title granted to the most senior noble families. The Duke or Duchess of Labonne is normally reserved for the heir apparent to the throne.
3. Marquis: possessor of a marquesate (marquisat) and recognized by the monarch. The lesser towns of the country are considered marquesates.
4. Comte: primarily a courtesy and honorific title, with no domain necessarily attached. It is granted by the monarch to a minor noble or the child of a high-ranking noble.
5. Vicomte: also a honorific title granted to lesser nobles.
6. Baron: a non-hereditary title granted to individuals who have provided great service to Rildanor in government and armed forces.
7. Seigneur: a non-hereditary title granted, in coordination with the Senate, to a very accomplished individual in his/her industry.

RANKS:

1. Fils/fille de Rildanor: son/daughter of a monarch.
2. Petit-fils/fille de Rildanor: grandson/daughter of a monarch.
3. Prince(sse) du Sang (prince of the blood): any legitimate descendant of a monarch of Rildanor.
4. Prince(sse) étranger (Foreign Prince): members of foreign royal or princely families naturalized at the Rildanorian court.
5. Chevalier: rank assumed only by the most noble families and the possessors of certain high dignities in the court.
6. Écuyer: rank of the vast majority of the nobles. Also called valet or noble homme in certain regions.

MessageHow should we establish Dukedoms? Should we just use each city as a Dukedom, meaning that the marquesate, comte, etc., will be named after random place names other than the recognised cities?

MessageI believe dukedoms should be the major city/regional capital of a canton, while marquesats should be the rest of the cities

MessageThat would limit it to only 5 dukedoms? That would certainly make for a tiny aristocracy. Marquesats have been traditionally limited to whatever property that family/individual owns, which are usually smaller places.

MessageAs per the "loi sur l'abolition de la noblesse" all noble titles are now extinct or will be extinct with the death of a current title holder. Ranks remain unaffected.
