Bill: Eminent Domain Compensation Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Totalitarian Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: February 2128
Description[?]:
Presently, when land is seized for vital government works, a neutral body is appointed by the courts to determine compensation. We feel the process would be much more efficient if the government determined the amount paid to the citizen whose land has been taken. The method used for determining the amount would involve examining current property costs in the area. The citizen should not be allowed to appeal, as the amount determined by the government will be fair. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change Eminent domain compensation (if eminent domain is legal).
Old value:: A neutral body appointed by the courts determines the compensation, either party may appeal.
Current: The victim of eminent domain sets compensation, government can appeal to the courts if they deem the cost too high.
Proposed: The government determines compensation for victims of eminent domain.

Message | The implications of this bill are quite obvious. Government gets complete power to overrule property rights. We can say that this is a good bill if we can assume government will never be corrupt, but that is a ridiculous assumption. |

Message | It is not complete power to overrule property rights. The government can only seize land when it is needed for vital government works. The amount paid to the citizen is fair, so there is no need for citizens to appeal. |

Message | we believe a neutral body should detirmine what is fair, not the government who is the one paying the price. |

Message | The government is working for the citizens. Why it would it want to cheat them? Is this legislature comprised of citizens who do not trust the government? |

Message | I will never trust government. It has absolutely no reason to look out for me. |
