Bill: Anti Police-State Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Rutanian Heritage Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: August 2755
Description[?]:
The concept of a national I.D card is incompatible with what the 'Rutanian Heritage Party' believes to be one of the core tenets of a civilized society - it is a gross invasion of personal privacy. The issuing of I.D cards well oversteps the boundaries of what the 'RHP' believe should be a properly limited federal government, and it is vital that we guard against such invasive policies for the prevention of tyranny and the abuse of power. It is the government that should be held accountable to the people, not the other way around - our authorities should be focussing their efforts on criminals, not law-abiding Rutanian citizens. Furthermore, the authority for the federal government to mandate an I.D card for every citizen of Rutania was not stipulated by the constitution, and any law or policy that is not in line with our nation's founding document should be immediately repealed. |

Message | As a side-note, we would like to remind our fellow parties that individuals can use their drivers' licenses, concession cards or any other cards of this nature to prove their date of birth, if need be. Beyond this, it is their perogative whether or not they care to divulge their identity, and they should never be compelled to against their will, so we do not believe it is important to issue a national I.D card to all citizens, regardless of whether they are required to carry it with them at all times or not. |

Message | The RHP would have some questions... Wouldn't be a unitary I.D.card system simpler? And how can we procede with the large number of imigrants coming to the country? If the concerns of the RHP are true, a unitary I.D. system would be beneficial. It would symbolize a realtion with the state, a sense of Rutanian identity. The arguments of the RHP are convincing, but fail to adress these problems. At the present moment we are reluctant to support this bill. |

Message | We don't believe that a citizen needs an I.D card to feel a part of the nation and to feel a sense of Rutanian identity. Furthermore, the current system is obviously more complicated and expensive than what we propose, which is to repeal the national I.D card system altogether - not only does it undermine privacy, but it is completely unnecessary. If individuals need to prove their identity, for one reason or another, they can use a number of other documents and cards. The issue is not so much that having an I.D card is, in itself, invasive - it's the purpose these cards serve, which is to have extensive information about every citizen on a national register, monitored by the federal government. If this isn't a gross invasion of privacy and an infringement of the most basic liberties in Rutania, what is? |
