Bill: Media Reform of 2802
Details
Submitted by[?]: Peoples Progressive Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: June 2803
Description[?]:
The PPP wishes to create just one station on both the radio and the television to run that shows what the government is up to, and to inform the people of what is going on in the Parliament. This station would run along side regular T.V. and radio and would not change the current status of media. The internet is a very useful tool in communication and social networking. The internet even provides a good source of news (for the most part). However, the internet can also be a very dangerous place. Child pornography and violent threats can run rampant and at times the police could use the information shared on the internet to protect our communities from the thieves of personal identity and the scum of child abuse to keep our communities safe. |

Message | We will support this legislation despite our objections to article III. Allowing government regulation of a medium as free as the internet is an extremely slippery slope. It starts with interfering only for the purpose of "getting the bad guys" and ends with harassing internet users for the pettiest offenses (minor copyright violations, etc.). The problem with this is it will majorly deter free information flow by going after people for what most of the time is a very benign offense that wouldn't even reach the inside of a courtroom. The most heinous of cybercrimes (child pornography, murder) are extremely rare, and when they do happen, we never get anything but the fullest cooperation from the catalyst to the crime, whether it be an instant messaging service, a social networking site, or some other type of website. We would not however, be opposed to including a class in our public schools which educates students about safe and legal internet use (OOC: this could be done through RPing using a resolution, which I would happily write).
