Bill: Anarch Anakrousite Reform Bill - Trade Union Abuse
Details
Submitted by[?]: Commonwealth Workers Army
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: December 2130
Description[?]:
The AAP believes that there currently exists the potential for very 'undemocratic' behaviour by Trade Union leaderships. While the AAP actively supports the right of a Trade Union group to call a strike... even to strike in support of another group... we believe that the rights of the WORKERS are being abused by the leadership of Trade Unions, and this imbalance should be addressed. Currently, so long as the leadership of a Trade Union wants a strike, ALL Union members must strike, or oppose their own Union - with all the possible repurcussions THAT could have. The AAP believes there should be opportunity for each worker to vote for, or against, any individual Strike action, with Strike Actions only being 'legitimate' when there is a greater proportion of support than of abstention or demurral. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change Trade union strike ballots.
Old value:: Trade unions are not required by law to hold a ballot before striking.
Current: Trade unions must by law hold a ballot of all members before going on strike, majority approval of those that vote is needed from its members.
Proposed: Trade unions must by law hold a ballot of all members before going on strike, a majority of all members, regardless of if they vote or not must approve the strike action.

Message | Just curious - why would the RLP vote AGAINST democratic representation in Trade Unions? |

Message | Because we are against government intervention in voluntary associations, no matter if it be associations of labor, business, or recreational activities. If the workers in a union would rather let the leadership decide their fate, that's their right, foolish as it may be. |

Message | Response to the RLP: But, surely, that is the point? The Trade Unions do not necessarily give the workers the 'choice' of whether they would "rather let the leadership decide their fate". While we appreciate that membership in a Trade Union is voluntary (indeed, we have fought specifically for that to be the case), there ARE benefits to being a Union member, that may persuade people to accept the current 'status quo', no matter how much they might personally wish expression, and resent the government of top level Union executives. Should each individual worker in the Union, NOT get an option to express themselves, BEFORE strike activity is legitimately allowed to be called in their name? You COULD argue it is not for the government to decide the internal politics of Unions... and, to be honest, the AAP would agree. However, STRIKING is not just 'internal' politics... and the AAP believes that, if Unions want to take advantage of the Likatonian liberty to strike, they MUST do so with the approval of a majority of Union members. |

Message | By electing to join a union which allows strikes without a membership vote, the worker has chosen to "let the leadership decide their fate". He or she could join a union which does require this, there are many in our fair country. Forcing freedom on those who do not want it is just as anit-libertarian as taking it away from those who do. |

Message | Response to the RLP: It sounds like what you are promoting is a 'negative liberty'.... the 'right' of the people to be poorly represented democratically. The AAP sees nothing libertarian about that. Example: There is only one Teacher Union in Likatonia (well, only one with any political power). If a Teacher wants to join a union, they can either join one of the tiny franchises (which might not have ANY benefits), or they can join the main Likatonian Teachers Union. However, the LTU does not allow for democratic representation. They can, effectively, call for a Strike Action, if the executives want one. The sort of 'freedom' you suggest, is the same sort of freedom presented in the choice "You can be THROWN into a pit of scorpions, or you can choose to throw YOURSELF into a pit of scorpions". It is not a 'real' freedom. |

Message | No, because option 3 is "you can walk around the pit of scorpions" (and please use easier to spell animals next analogy) If enough teachers decide tghey do not like the main Likatonian Teachers Union, they will all join one of the tiny ones, and it will no longer be tiny. That is what we believe to be real freedom. |

Message | Sorry the scorpions were a problem :) If the Teacher wants representation, they need a Union with some 'muscle'. Thus - they are automatically going to want to join the powerful Unions. Some of the Unions can capitalise on this, by allowing the best representation BY THE UNION, but by not allowing representation IN the Union. |
