MessageWe want consistency. Prayer should be private and personal so we will vote against this bill.

MessageReligion is a private thing and the FRP firmly believes in the separation of church and state.

Nevertheless there are religious concerns to consider, such as the fact that religious Muslims pray 5 times a day. We do not have the right to prevent them from worshiping .

We would like to reiterate that if we support this bill it is because we understand it to mean that teachers can pray and lead school prayers services, but those services are completely voluntary.

MessageOn the other hand, if we had home-schooling and private education we would not even have to worry about this bill because children could go to those schools if they wanted prayer.

MessageWe oppose, though note that teachers should be allowed to lead prayer when not acting in their capacity as a teacher (eg a Christian Union).

MessageThe FRP has changed its stance on this issue.

We have come to the realization through our research that there are a number of problems with legislation that lets teachers lead school prayer.

First and foremost;
many school seem to be homogeneous in their religious containment. There are mostly christians with 3-4 agnostics/atheists and 3-4 children of other religions. Teacher led prayer may lead to children being ostracized and bullied because they do not want to pray.

Second;
Separation of Church and state is important if our government is going to be tolerant of other views, religions and cultures. religion has historically caused problems in the area of tolerance. we're not against religion, we just don't want to take the risk that this would happen again.

third;
any viable alternatives that the party has thought of, (PS this is mostly based on the good point raised by the RC) can conflict with the education of children. Public school is where children are educated; they are taught skills and their natural abilities are improved when possible. It is not an institution that is meant to promote 'values,' that should be left to parents who are the best judge of how they want to raise their children.

In conclusion: The FRP is going to retract this bill, though we will leave it up for a short time for others to comment on and read. We would also like to affirm that Public school should not hinder religious activity, if a child wants to pray in school, he or she should be allowed to.

The FRP welcomes your insight.

MessageThe FRP would, nevertheless, like to say that we continue to support the PP and any further legislation that it may put forward. We wish to continue on a path of mutual cooperation.
