Description[?]:
The Freedom Party believes that the current legislation regarding foreign marriages which states that “all foreign marriages are recognised, regardless of domestic policy regarding marriage” is more than inadequate for a number of reasons. Firstly, to recognise foreign marriages in all it’s guises ultimately means that we accept those new comers with multiple wives, or those that marry goats, or those that marry minors, or those that marry their kin, or those that are coerced into marriage. In the case of multiple wives this legislation as it stands clearly contradicts the Rutania’s policy with respect to polygamy, which says that polygamy is not recognised. Also legislation against bestiality is contravened. The age at which one is considered an adult in Rutania is 18, this is also the age of consent, again legislation is ignored and it would surprise Freedom very much if Rutania were to say it is legal for people to marry their kin, although currently there is no explicit law on the books in Rutania opposed to incestuous marriage. So what we have here is a situation where although our laws are already in place, anyone coming here, or that goes abroad to take advantage of a country whose laws permit non-Rutanian views on marriage and returns married to their sister or a minor for example, can automatically override our own laws. Should our law choose to prosecute or annul the marriage of a Rutanian citizen then we have a two-tier justice system if foreigners are allowed their way. Freedom deplores the idea of a free-for-all for marriage and also the creation of division between Rutanian’s and foreigners. This effectively means our laws have become obsolete to outsiders, meaning the energy and effort used to pass the original laws in parliament have been a complete waste of members time. We may as well have no law on marriage or sexuality, a situation to which Freedom finds even less desirable. Freedom would like to see this inconsistency addressed and new legislation introduced which will read: * Only foreign marriages that comply with domestic policy regarding marriage are recognised. Date | 16:50:03, January 31, 2010 CET | From | Freedom Party | To | Debating the Foreign Marriage Act |
Message | The Freedom Party are genuinely surprised by the lack of support from the other political parties to this bill. Freedom feels the REP, LDSP and the LDP have, by voting against this legislation, left the marriage system in Rutania wide open to abuse. The consequences, as always, remain to be seen. Date | 15:30:52, February 01, 2010 CET | From | People's Party of Rutania | To | Debating the Foreign Marriage Act |
Message | We at the PPR are baffled as to why this bill has not received more support. We would like to hear some reasons from the parties not supporting this bill. |
Date | 19:22:13, February 01, 2010 CET | From | Liberal Democratic Party | To | Debating the Foreign Marriage Act |
Message | We believe it is duplicating already existing laws. The bill description points this out perfectly. Polgamy is already an offence as is beastiality etc. |
Date | 00:29:35, February 02, 2010 CET | From | Freedom Party | To | Debating the Foreign Marriage Act |
Message | But the ability of foreigners to come into the country with status contradictory to our marital laws is not, or don't we have immigration? In no way is it duplication. Ben Richards Freedom Party Ldr |
