Message | ooc: IMO "Siam People Republic" is not really the name of anything IRL and violates no rules. However I dislike it and much prefer shire :) |

Message | OOC: Siam is a real place... though it is a historical name, it is still Thailand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thailand |

Message | ooc: correct, but "Siam People Republic" is not. |

Message | OOC: On that principle, we could have "French Republic" or "Chinese Republic" as a region name. |

Message | ooc: on your principle "Whig" might be a problem because it was/is a real world political party ;) Who are the whigs and torys today, btw? |

Message | OOC: Ah but it is not particular to one country. The Whigs became the Liberal Party, and the Tories are the Conservatives, we still call them the Tories informally. |

Message | ooc: does anybody call the liberal democrats the whigs these days? Americans had a whig party once as well, I wonder if you call our democrats whigs and our republicans tories? |

Message | OOC: The Lib dems are not ever referred to with their old Whig name, They are more associated with the Liberal Party of the early 20th century. David Lloyd George is often referenced as one of the best PMs in history. So they like to use his image I think. (Though in my opinion he was a far better chancellor... his peoples budget was genious!) I remember looking at earlier American Politics, there were some pretty interesting parties, like the "Know Nothings." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_nothing_party Don't use old terms for American parties. We can't even compare them to our parties. The Republicans are seen as texan oil tycoons with guns, and the democrats are seen as very left wing... Though I think I am right in saying that most Britons prefer the Dems. We don't hear too much about other parties though, always hear that America is a two party country. Britain is more 2 and 1/2 party system, as nobody takes the lib dems particularly seriously. |

Message | ooc: lol, we are a defacto 2-party country, mores the pity... We have a green party, a reform party, libertarian party and probably several others, but they are nearly entirely ignored and have no members of congress AFAIK. I think in a better world we'd have a ton of parties like italy and some other places, but the system has evolved to favor our current rulership. While foreign people seem to prefer our democrat party, I don't see more than a symbolic difference between the two. Bush and Obama both seek to reduce our freedoms while increasing our debt and the number of our wars. Both of them gave a giant corporate welfare bail-out that most americans disapprove of... as if our opinion matters. They will do what they want to do, and continue giving us the same sorts of options the soviet people used to have: comrade A or comrade B, as different as you like in propaganda, essentially identical in policy. |
