Description[?]:
In order to establish a set of official government holidays and, in doing so, promote our nation's history and culture, the BNR proposes this bill. Act 1: An official government holiday shall be defined as the anniversary of an historical event and/or the birthday of an historically important person and/or a religious celebration and/or a culturally important day or celebration that has been designated by the Parliament of the Commonwealth as an official day of rest and celebration. Act 2: As the official religion of the Commonwealth of Yishelem and Beiteynu is Judaism, most Jewish holidays are official government holidays (see Article 4 for complete list). While few, if any, holidays of any other religions will be official government holidays, if a person is a member of a religion other than Judaism, then they may be fully excused from work and/or school on the legitimate holidays of their religion. Article 3: The holidays listed in Article 3 of this same bill will become official government holidays immediately after this bill is passed. In order to add new official government holidays, a bill must be introduced into and passed by a two-thirds majority vote by the Parliament of the Commonwealth. Article 4: Complete List of Current Official Government Holidays When this bill is passed, these holidays will immediately become official government holidays. Holidays are either secular (non-religious; usually cultural), historical, or religious. Every Saturday of the Year: Shabbat (religious) January: 1 - Secular New Year's Day (secular) February: dawn to sunset 26: Fast of Esther (religious) sunset 27 - sunset 28: Purim (religious) March: 29 - Fast of the Firstborn (religious) sunset 29 - Start of Passover (religious) April: nightfall 6 - End of Passover (religious) May: 2 - Lag BaOmer (religious) 24 - Yishelem and Beiteynu Day (secular/historical) June: 2 - The King's Birthday (secular) July: dawn to sunset 9 - Seventeenth of Tammuz (religious) sunset 19 - nightfall 20: Tisha B'Av (religious) August: 15 - Yom HaShoah; Holocaust Remembrance Day (historical) September: sunset 8 - sunset 10: Rosh Hashanah ("Jewish New Year") (religious, but also celebrated secularly) 12 - Fast of Gedalia (religious/historical) sunset 17 - nightfall 18: Yom Kippur (religious) sunset 22 - nightfall 30: Sukkot (religious) 30 - Shemini Atzeret (religious) October: 1 - Simchat Torah (religious) 15 - Beiteynu-Luthori War and Ceasefire Remembrance Day (historical) November: 11 - Yom Hazikaron; Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism Remembrance Day (historical) December: sunset 1 - sunset 9: Hanukkah (religious, but also celebrated secularly) 25 - Christmas Day (religious, but also celebrated secularly) OOC: I really need other parties' help on this one - I may not be aware of very important historical dates or people that deserve their own holiday. Thanks to the Constitutional Imperial League for the King's Birthday. P.S. OOC: For multiple-day holidays like Passover and Hanukkah, I am using the 2010 dates. |

Message | What would be a good month and day to do something like Yishelem and Beiteynu Day? In which people would just celebrate their nation. Does the date matter or can it be whenever? |

Message | OOC: Correct me if I'm wrong, DSPB and CZP, but I'm pretty sure that there has been more than one instance in which the Jews of Yishelem and Beiteynu were massacred. During the Islamic rule of Beiteynu, was it not? Anyway, I suppose it's not a holocaust in our sense, but it's close enough. |

Message | OOC: The closest thing to a holocaust-like event would be the nuclear destruction of Clenon, which was largely populated by Jewish People: http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Deimore_Incident Or, if you wanted something a bit more ancient, I've always thought of the Sacking of Bira in June 1493 by Pontesian forces as being one of the more important points in Beiteynus pre-game history. Also, a number of times independence has been gained from Pontesi, probably most significantly in 2359, so some sort of day to commemorate that might be worth including if you decide to add to this in future. |

Random fact: Particracy does not allow official national flags of real-life nations or flags which are very prominent and recognisable (eg. the flags of the European Union, the United Nations, Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union or the Confederate States of America). |
