Message | In fairness to the government, this is a smart move. Slashing defence spending has enabled us to reduce the deficit which will in turn mean that an incoming JAfP government would not have to raise taxes by as much as was previously thought. However, we still believe that the government made the wrong move in reducing income taxes and this budget is now trying to cover their tracks in increasing our eye-watering deficit. -John Halligan Finance Spokesman |

Message | This shows the "center"s really agenda. All it does is hate everything a tad bit to the right. Another socialist party has awakened in Jakania.. We're not trying to cover our tracks. We have saved up 8 trillion JAK for rainy day fund, and we're now using it. That there are no imminent threats is obvious, and therefore we're cutting defense spending. |

Message | There are other effects associated with running a deficit. Other than that, you're eroding that rainy day fund, as you put it, when we could really need it in the future. What if, say down the line, we are attacked or a national emergency (civil war or somesuch) breaks out? |
Date | 18:01:53, May 04, 2010 CET | From | Republican Party of Jakania | To | Debating the Budget proposal of March 2933 |
Message | We had an enormously bad recession with 1 trillion setback in GDP. If that's not sufficient for burning off a bit of the rainy day fund, then I don't know what is. |

Message | (OOC: What recession. No god-modding, now.) |

Message | OOC: Seriously dude. Our GDP was at 21.5 trillion. Then there were market fluctuations throughout Terra. Heard Zardugal was hit too. Setback of one trillion in one BAM. No kidding around here. That's the hole point of my trying to run deficits to stimulate growth; but apparently you didn't catch my screaming recession 150 times... |

Message | (OOC: I didn't hear about that. Sounds fair enough, but if you want to get the GDP up you should artificially inflate it with higher government spending funded in part by higher taxes.) |

Message | (OOC: Yeah, sure, if the only objective is higher GDP, you can just deficit spend to infinity in this game.. but sure, in IG discussions, we will RP to claim that tax cuts revitalize the economy (even though they don't as effective as spending IG) and we'll also say more spending for S&T will spur innovation and all that. But it's important to get the facts straight when it comes to say the recession and all that. I'm keeping a sheet of numbers tracking growth, deficits and all that to keep it a tad bit more interesting to play.) |
