Description[?]:
While we recognise that many cults which practice polygamy do so in exploitative and dangerous ways, many other people practice some form of non-monogamous because they do not feel comfortable with the concept of monogamy for emotional or political reasons. It is our opinion that the government should have no law on who can fall in love with who. We believe that laws against spousal abuse are sufficient to protect those in unhealthy polygamous relationships. But there are many forms of polyamory which are perfectly acceptable and at present unrecognised by the state. It is our belief that the government should give the same recognition to all relationships. Our suggestion is that every citizen should be granted to right to declare one civil partner, who for tax and legal reasons will be identified as their spouse. However, civil partnerships will not have to be reciprocal. This means that groups of people who wish to identify as married can arrange their affairs so that every member is married to somebody. We would also like to introduce a form of adult adoption which allows people to officially claim those who they are not in official civil partnership with, and have no blood relationship with, as family members. This will be useful not only for group relationships, but also for communal homes where flatmates may wish to identify each other as next of kin, so that they can take responsibility for each other in times of crisis. For instance, in a situation where one member of a shared house goes insane, those who have been living with them and caring for them for a long time would have the right to make decisions on the patient's behalf. This could be especially helpful in situations where a person is estranged from, or does not trust, their family. |

Message | The RMS's proposal will open the floodgates for abuse of this law for tax fraud purposes. Power of attorney rights can already be assigned through legal means--this "adult adoption" idea is unnecessary and needlessly complicated. Furthermore, we note that it is by no means illegal for a group of people to be involved in some sort of a polygamous relationship, but up until now we have not accorded government recognition of these relationships. This is an important distinction. We must have a discussion of why the government is involved in the recognition of relationships to begin with before we make this leap of redefinition. |

Message | Union Socialism Alliance would participate in said discussion, and would accept a compromise, but will make sure that polygamous marriages gets it's due recognition. Anyone who wants to get married, be it one or several times, and be it with the opposite gender or the same, or both, should be allowed to do so. Message | We believe that the tax loopholes opened by marriage relationships are not sufficient problems to this bill. The tax benefits allowed by marriage are not sufficient to require a rewrite, marriage is rarely used as a way to ensure tax breaks, and we see no reason why this system would be, especially if benefit and tax agencies are given authority to check on further marriage chains in making their assessment on individual cases. Government recognition of relationships is a formality which is very useful for tax and benefits purposes. We need a way to distinguish, for instance, between a stay at home parent with a wealthy spouse, and an unemployed person with no means of support other than the state. |
