Bill: Abortion (Local Authority) Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Reform Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: February 2939
Description[?]:
As a social and moral issue, the Reform Party fervently opposes abortion in all circumstances. Most in the pro-abortion camp justify their position not on the grounds that the termination of a human life is morally permissible in certain circumstances, but that a human-being in its early stages of growth is not to be considered a 'person' or a ‘life’ at all. Proponents either claim that a life does not begin at conception – the point at which it naturally comes into existence and begins its process of evolution as a human entity - but at some other arbitrarily defined stage of development, or that 'personhood' can only be conferred on a human who is self-sufficient, which is an equally arbitrary distinction, and presumes that autonomy is the only element making a life worthy of moral recognition. Often, these claims are made with reference to an unborn fetus as a ‘clump of cells’ or ‘tissue matter’, phrases which are deliberately used to dehumanize it to allow moral disengagement and absolve guilt. Ultimately, the abortion advocates’ arguments rely solely on these arbitrary and abstract conceptions of life and personhood, and merely seek to redefine human life to fit their pernicious aim, which is to justify and excuse the mass-murder of unborn children whose lives are viewed as an unacceptable inconvenience. It is impossible to be a ‘person’ (using the abortionists' vague definition of the word, meaning a sentient and self-sufficient human-being) without having first been a group of cells, a fetus, and so on, so a developing fetus is no less a human life than a 2 year-old child, a 30 year-old person, or a 70 year-old person; the fetus is the same living, evolving entity that later grows into a child and an adult, so how can it be defined as something seperate and morally distinct? The pro-abortion camp’s definitional arguments are abstract, inherently flawed and erroneous, and have no basis in reality. However, although the Reform Party is strongly opposed to abortion, we do not see it as a matter for federal jurisdiction. The more power is concentrated and centralized, the more it has a propensity to corrupt, and to have such important moral and social issues determined by the majoritarian will of the State is tyrannical. Therefore, the RP believe that government authority over social matters such as abortion should reside closer to the communities they affect, so that peoples' concerns will be better represented and reflected in policy. We propose that decision-making capacity on the issue of abortion be devolved to local governments. |
