Message | Madame Speaker, this is fundamentally ridiculous. How can the honorable lady present a bill that will opress the working people of this country that she so often states that she supports! The CLP is not a working persons party if it is taking away their rights as human beings. |

Message | Madam Speaker, the Labour Party are not looking at this rationally nor sensibly. This is not denying the right of workers to strike - we would never make the right to strike illegal. But, Madam Speaker, the Labour Party are attempting to create a fundamentally unbalanced system that gives trade unions a vast amount of power. Madam Speaker, if workers have an unlimited right to strike, then employers should have certain rights as well. What good is a workforce to an employer if they are out on strike all the time? If they go on strike for a trivial matter such as the quality of the tea, they can do so safe in the knowledge that the employer can do nothing about it. Do the Labour Party truly believe that the employer should have no control over his workforce whatsoever? Madam Speaker, the other parties will no doubt attempt to portray this as an opportunity for employers to simply sack workers come what may. Madam Speaker, such a situation would never happen. If an employer's entire workforce goes out on strike, it would be extremely unlikely that they would all be fired - the employer would not be able to afford to do such a thing! And it would also be unlikely that we would have anybody come to work for him if he received such a reputation. However, Madam Speaker, that fundamental right should remain with the employer. Who in their right mind would set up a business under such a system, where trade unions can do as they please while the employer has no rights whatsoever? Nobody would, Madam Speaker. If we are giving workers the right to do as they please, then employers need some rights too. |
