Message | Rt Hon Marchioness Chukulate MP, Justice Secretary: Madam Speaker, this particular law has been in need of amendment for a long time. As it stands, any member of this House is not allowed to sue a private individual. Whilst that may, in some ways, be seen as a good thing, in actuality, it means that if a newspaper editor were to say something particularly outrageous about one of us, we would not be allowed to retaliate. If a businessman were to claim something about one of us that was factually incorrect, we would not be allowed to retaliate. Madam Speaker, public and private individuals alike should be able to sue for damages - the courts are best able to decide if such action is necessary. |
