Bill: The Bureau for the Investigation of Unpatriotic Activities
Details
Submitted by[?]: Benevolent Totalitarian Party - FLF
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: February 2047
Description[?]:
It has come to our attention that several independent organizations, political parties and even private individuals have engaged in subversive activities aiming to undermine the authority and legitimacy of the Government of Gaduridos and the rightful ruling party, the Benevolent Totalitarian Party. If left unchecked, these activities could well evolve into full scale terrorism and endanger the lives of our citizens. Therefore, as a pre-emptive measure, we propose the creation of a Bureau for the Investigation of Unpatriotic Activities (BIUP). The BIUP shall be placed under the authority of the BTP and it shall co-ordinate anti-terrorist and anti-subversive efforts on a national scale. The powers of the BIUP will include: 1. Full access to suspects' criminal records and any other information about their activities. 2. The right to interrogate suspects and witnesses by any means necessary (in conformity with the Law and Order bill). 3. The freedom to use electronic means of surveillance to intercept various forms of communication, including telephone calls and internet access. 4. The freedom to make searches and arrests without court orders. 5. The right to use deadly force against uncooperating suspects. Individuals found guilty of engaging in unpatriotic activities will receive sentences ranging from 30 years in prison to the death penalty. If those individuals are members of any political parties, those parties shall be banned. |

Message | The fact that this anti-democratic proposal could even be put forth shows that the BTP has lost the moral authority to govern our great country. The DCP opposes this bill whole heartedly. We will do everything in our power to defeat it. |

Message | Really, it will only be 9 months, as the law won't be constitutional until your bill to take control of the judicial branch passes in March 2047. |

Date | 11:51:13, May 04, 2005 CET | From | Benevolent Totalitarian Party - FLF | To | Debating the The Bureau for the Investigation of Unpatriotic Activities |
Message | Unconstitutional? Please read our nation's constitution: http://aiglesrv.no-ip.info:8080/particracy/main/viewconstitution.php?nationid=23 There's nothing unconstitutional about the BIUP. Also, the government can't dismantle what it doesn't control - the BIUP is under the authority of the BTP. |
Date | 02:05:33, May 05, 2005 CET | From | People's Progressive Party | To | Debating the The Bureau for the Investigation of Unpatriotic Activities |
Message | Actually its going to be publically funded thus it can dismantle it. If you say "no" its funded by the BTP, then theres no reason this legislation to go through and even its being proposed is invalid. However, if there is a trace of public money to this ridiculous operation then it will be dismantled and any of its members violating civil rights will be put on trial. |

Message | Ah, good point about the funding. But first you'll need to pass a law to dismantle it, and you can't put anyone on trial, since that would be ex post facto. (you can't condemn someone for committing a crime that was not considered a crime at the time he committed it) |
Date | 10:10:23, May 05, 2005 CET | From | People's Progressive Party | To | Debating the The Bureau for the Investigation of Unpatriotic Activities |
Message | Actually since theres nothing in the constitution giving a secret police the right o engage in the activities you wish it too under the control of a political party, any imposition of its will on an individual is liable to arrest by the regular law enforcement authorities. |

Random fact: Party candidates for head of state elections are not visible to the public. This means that you cannot see who will run and who will not, which adds another strategic element to the elections. |
