Message | USA, your argument about drug prices is totally unfounded. First of all, deregulating science means scientists dont have to waste time worrying about whether their methods are allowed and can just get on with it, making the whole process more efficient. And fundamentally you ignore the effect of competition on the market. If company x and company y both produce dihydrocodeine, the drug will do the same thing whether bought from company x or y. But because they are in competition the two companies will be engaged in a constant battle to push the price down. Nowhere in the process can they compromise on the drug itself or it wont be the same drug, thus the price will decrease at the expense of the companies themselves. If government owns the facilities to make drugs the price can only go up as there is no reason for the price to decrease. |

Message | In the hands of a true socialist government, the price would be low, or there wouldn't be a price at all (in a true socialist society). In the hands of the market, if demand is high, up goes the prices. A system where greed and profit are the driving factor, we see a huge possibility of a terrible outcome for the people of Ikradon. |

Message | I would mention here A&L that your scenario *only* works in the absence of copyright laws, which drug companies abuse.... So, your argument against USA is fallacious as you are currently also pushing through a copyright bill. Open the markets, down with copyright! No more corporate favoritism! |

Message | And in reality the copyright bill was never going to pass for whatever reason. It had minority support when it was proposed let alone now. Existing drugs couldn't have been subject to copyright or patent anyway, even if the bill did pass given the fact that the copyright was effectively in the hands of the state and unless the whole of the state's drug production apparatus was sold to a single company (which would have been a horrendously irresponsible way to do it). |

Random fact: Did you know you can change the official name of your nation? All you need to do is draw up a new name that is in accordance with the Nation Renaming Guide, pass a bill proposing the name change with a two-thirds majority and then post a request to Moderation on the "Renaming Requests" thread. You can change city and region names in this way too. |
