MessageOnce again, we feel that this bill presents a highly unrealistic standard of morality. There is a reason why prostitution is often referred to euphemistically as "the oldest profession": namely, it has always existed, and always will exist as long as there are sexually frustrated people who feel the need to employ the services of prostitutes.

Furthermore, an outright ban on prostitution will drive the industry underground. Our government-regulated brothels had eliminated the system of pimping, which had such a cruel and exploitative impact on prostitutes. Furthermore, a legal and regulated industry ensures that we are able to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases through mandatory use of contraceptives and regular health inspections of brothels. Should the industry be illegalised, these progressive gains would be lost, and we would return to the bad old days of rampant STDs, abusive pimps and an industry that feeds into organized crime. Surely that is a step backward, not a step forward?

As to the first measure, we ask how the NP intends to enforce that measure? An adult in our nation is anyone who is 18 years of age, but in reality a segment of adolescents begins to indulge in the use of pornography at an earlier age, and likely always will. Surely it should be up to parents and communities to determine whether or not their young people should have access to pornographic materials.
