Message | It is absolutely shameful that you think anyone deserves to live at a "very basic subsistence level". There's more than enough wealth in this nation to go around, and those who are unable to find work or incapable of performing work should not have to suffer. |

Message | First of all, there is the matter of the budget. Even with the recent cuts and high level of taxation, we are running a deficit that is well over half the GDP. No, the government does not have enough money to guarantee a "reasonable" standard of living to everyone, unless you want the country to go bankrupt. Secondly, I understand "subsistence level" to mean enough to guarantee the basic human needs of people: food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, and so on. I do not believe that anyone deserves to starve. However, anything beyond these basic needs, people should have to work for. If the government guarantees everyone a "reasonable" living standard, than what incentive is there for people to work? And if everyone stops working, the economy takes a nosedive, and then you have no money to fund anything. |
