Message | We generally agree with these proposals, but we are concerned about the proposals restricting divorce and condoning polygamy. If the partners in a marriage feel that there is no point in going on as a married couple, that should be grounds enough for a divorce; under this proposal, it requires that one partner be at fault for some kind of perceived transgression, and we feel that that creates a negative climate around divorce that wasn't there before, as well as keeping together couples who may be unhappy. Divorce is a civil right, just as marriage is. As to polygamy, we are not against it when all parties are consenting adults, but how will we ensure that it does not become an exploitative practice? There should be some kind of additional regulation to polygamous marriages simply because they involve more people and are thus more complex than monogamous marriages. |

Message | We feel that divorce is usually a negative thing, as it signifies the end of a relationship which may have still been salvageable. By legalising polygamy we can allow people who grow disillusioned with their first spouses to remarry while still being obligated to maintain their relationship with their first spouse. If their become any serious cases of unhappy couples then we will reconsider this position. There should be regulations for polygamy and we interpret them as being those set out by religions. We should however probably find a way to codify the regulations into civil law. |
