Bill: Pension Reform Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Libertarian Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: July 3138

Description[?]:

The state pension system has been insolvent for years. With the rising number of elderly citizens compared to young workers, the system will inevitably increase its debt. The public pension system, further, has a negative effect upon our citizens. It creates a moral hazard to not save up and instead rely on the pension. Prior to the the development of the public pension system, there were many private alternatives, and most of the population was covered by some form of insurance against old age. The public pension crowded out and destroyed much of this system. The public pension has not been an economic use of state money, and like a number of other government programs, represents a subsidy from the poor, who are more likely to be young workers, to the rich, who are much more likely to be elderly. The LP requests that the legislature repeal this expensive state commitment and irrational subsidy.

MessageWe are not willing to abandon the public pension system, but for the sake of budget reductions we do support, and have voted accordingly, to raise the retirement age, so to ease government expense.
