Bill: Subsidized Public Transport

Details

Submitted by[?]: Libertäre-Grüne Bewegung

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: January 3232

Description[?]:

The logic behind this bill is the same as that behind the Health Care Solutions Act: poor citizens need support because they cannot afford basic services that they depend on even more than our wealthier citizens. In this case, there is the added motivation of encouraging use of public transportation as an environmentally sound means of transport.

Rainer Beyer
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

MessagePublic transport is not a basic service. The private companies operating trains throughout the country indeed offer considerable discounts for certain groups of people, which we consider sufficient.

MessageWe agree with the LDP. The LGB's logic is typically flimsy. As long as private operators exist, the incentives for them are (1) to ensure that their cost structures, and hence prices, are competitive enough so that they can actually attract customers, and (2) to price-discriminate (by offering discounts) to attract certain groups of customers. These incentives at the firm level are quite sufficient. Moreover, the empirical basis for the LGB's claims of an affordability crisis simply does not exist.

- Ksenia Shundrovskaya, transport and infrastructure spokesperson for the Konservative Partei.
