We must remain modest, we shall remain prudent and we will keep our honour with this bill." - Cyril Clark, Minister of Internal Affairs "Who sows virtue reaps honor." - Unknown Author (OOC: Leonardo da Vinci ) Whereas: 1 - Current laws allow for public nudity, a law in which honor is not conveyed 2 - Current laws do not stop descration against our national flag, an act that fails to honour this great nation Therefore, let it be resolved that: |

Message | Mr. Speaker, We deplore seeing our national flag being desecrated and believe that if people have a point, there are much better ways of expressing themselves. Nevertheless, we shy away from imposing a legal prohibition upon the practice. The police have more important matters do deal with. Also, there is a freedom of expression issue at stake. We share the RPP's disapproval of publc nudity, and would support a ban on it. However, we would not object to making an allowance for naturist camps. Although we are not keen on these naturist camps, we do not support forcing them all to close. |

Message | Mr. Speaker, For the sake of political comprimise, we are willing to amend article 2 to allow nudist colonies and private nude beaches. We are, unfortunately, unwilling to waver on Article 1. Freedom of expression is a right guarenteed, but it does not extend to harming our national flag. That is a law that is needed, and a moral step up for our citizens at large. Believe me, the police will love to charge the criminals who burn our flag and will not intefer in their regular duty, as we believe that the descration of the flag barely happens. Should it happen though, we must not allow it. |

Message | Mr. Speaker, We encourage the RPP to separate this into 2 Bills, so we can vote for one and against the other rather. |

Message | Mr Speaker, We hold freedom of speech and freedom of expression to be inalienable human rights which no government or legislature has the right to remove. We therefore cannot support this bill as passing such a law would set Telamon back on the slippery slope towards authoritarianism. What would come next? A law against desecrating images of the country's politicians? A law restricting criticism of the government? No, we cannot support this misguided bill. Whilst we agree that citizens should be encouraged to take pride in their nation and show respect this cannot be imposed by laws in any society which seeks to call itself free and democratic. Random fact: Did you know you can change the official name of your nation? All you need to do is draw up a new name that is in accordance with the Nation Renaming Guide, pass a bill proposing the name change with a two-thirds majority and then post a request to Moderation on the "Renaming Requests" thread. You can change city and region names in this way too. |
