(OOC: All right, Luthori aristocracy clearly needs a clear-out. I was going to write a long post on this, but it got deleted (stupid IE crash...)

Basically, I think we should get rid of the landed/non-landed distinction, abolish the margrave/marcher lord thing since its redundant when we have marquesses, replace most of the honours/heraldic orders (which sound like japanese RPG powerups), keep a list of titles, establish a system for "taking over" a family when the player controlling them goes inactive, and also the regularity of honours lists (like in the UK on New Year's Day, etc.), and peerage creations.

For taking over a family, I propose that the previous controlling player must have been inactive for a minimum of two (real-world) months, and the new player must win the majority in the relevant Duchy where the family resides/owns land for a minimum of two consecutive elections. The old player may reassert control be winning the election in that Duchy again, with no requirement for inactivity or a second reelection. Gaps in the family history should be explained/provided, and changes in politics should be similarly explained by some reasonable manner.

Honours: Orders should be named with some sort of thinking behind them, and probably after notable Luthori saints, legendary historical events, the establishing monarch, or with some reason for their existence (like the British system: see the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George, the Order of the Garter, the Royal Victorian Order, the Order of the British Empire). Orders should contain grades (ranks), decided on at creation (see various British orders for inspiration).

These are different to decorations, which are awarded for military servie and do not contain ranks, but are themselves ranked (A VC being higher than the Military Cross, etc.). We should probably deal with Decorations in a different thread.

Heraldic achievements should be described in correct heraldic terminology (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_heraldry ; (Overview)
http://www.burkespeerage.com/articles/heindex.aspx (Heraldic terms glossary)
http://www.apl385.com/gilling/herldref.htm (general guide/glossary)

It should be remembered that the coat of arms/achievement belongs to the family, not the name.

At present, these are the honours which can be awarded to a character:

1. The Order of Richard
Motto: Dieu le Ward
Grades:
Knight of the Order of Richard
Companion of the Order of Richard
Postnominal letters: KR, CR
Extra information: The oldest order dating to the reign of the emperor Richard I, it was established as his personal bodyguard.

2. The Most Distinguished and Excellent Order of St James
Grades:
Grand Knight Commander
Knight Commander
Knight
Postnominal letters: GKJ, KCJ, KJ
Extra information: Second-highest ranking order.

3. The Most Distinguished Order of the Basin
Grades:
Knight Grand Cross
Knight Commander
Knight Banneret
Squire
Companion
Postnominal letter: KGB, KCB, KB, SB, CB
Extra information: Of relatively late date, the name derives from ancient rituals (later proven entirely fictitious) for the creation of a knight.

4. The Order of the Golden Horn
Grades: Knight-errant
Squire
Postnominal letters: KG, SG
Extra information: Second-oldest order, named after the legendary Golden Horn of Sondavita.

5. The Order of the Luthori Empire
Grades: Grand Commander
Knight Commander
Commander
Officer
Member
Postnominal letters: GLE, KLE, CLE OLE, MLE
Extra information: Late established order, given for all kinds of service, but with a particular preference for international, colonial and diplomatic service.
