Bill: Repeal of Torture Laws
Details
Submitted by[?]: Mordusian Freedom Group
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: March 3297
Description[?]:
We in the MFG believe that torture is an abuse of the rights of humans which undermines our country as it reduces us to the level of terrorists. Torture can also lead to anti Mordusian feeling throughout the world especially in other democratic countries that would see this practice as barbaric and outdated. It can also lead people to gain sympathy for criminals and make law and order within our own state look bad. It is in this end that I would call on the government to ban the use of Torture altogether and join the growing list of countries that have previously done so. |
Proposals

Date | 01:42:05, April 30, 2012 CET | From | Social Progressive Party of Mordusia | To | Debating the Repeal of Torture Laws |
Message | The UASJ Monthly Business meeting adopted the following minute of support: We would support this bill were your Party to add a proposal to the resolution above. We too oppose torture as it is both unnecessarily harsh and denies justice to another human being. |
Date | 10:24:27, April 30, 2012 CET | From | Agrarian Party of Mordusia | To | Debating the Repeal of Torture Laws |
Message | Minister of Justice Anne-Sophie de Caullet, a Libertine, advises against this proposal. She said: "If there is one that Mordusia is known for, it is the humane treatment of all those in its Government's care. To fully abolish torture, a mean by which police officers can extort information in a way that has the well-being of society itself as a purpose, is to neglect the harsh reality out there." Julie-Ann Witthacker, long time Minister and a former Speaker of the SZB, didn't wish to comment on the voting itself. She merely added: "Torture is hardly practiced in the Free Republic as there is no need to. I can't remember of a case. The legislation clearly is obsolete, though that shouldn't mean we can do away with it just like that." |
Date | 14:14:13, April 30, 2012 CET | From | Mordusian Freedom Group | To | Debating the Repeal of Torture Laws |
Message | Justice spokesman for the MFG Eamonn deFaoite said: 'We are disappointed with the government's stance in this matter however we accept their reasons. We will however keep this on the back burner until the time arises that we can try again. We in the MFG believe ultimately a free and moderns society should completely distance themselves from this practice' |
Date | 16:59:24, April 30, 2012 CET | From | Social Progressive Party of Mordusia | To | Debating the Repeal of Torture Laws |
Message | The Standing Committee for the Concern of Torture in the UASJ offered the following comment: Our Meeting and its political Arm in the UASJ has committed to assisting the Mordusian Freedom Group in abolishing torture in our Republic. We call for a more enlightened Republic, and that includes the adoption of human rights as the fundamental core of the nation. We became active in politics to move the country more in the direction of human rights, which exclude torture. Furthermore, we note that there is no evidence provided by the Government, whatsoever, that demonstrates that torture does anything by hurts people. There is no evidence that more information is gained under torture than under other methods, and when information is obtained, there is no evidence that it is actionable, let alone accurate or useful in any way. We must support the advancement of humanity, and that includes the reduction of use of force by people who have power against people who are powerless. We stand for humanity, and so we must stand against torture. We will continue to support the efforts of the MFG to pass this legislation into law. |
