Message | You consider going on strikes without even giving reasons a human right? This way, you give union bosses the opportunity to deprive business owners of their entrepreneurial freedom! This is class warfare and comes close to an expropriation of businessmen! Unity is obviously shifting towards mere socialism. Ellen Connelly GNP Spokeswoman for Trade and Industry |
Date | 16:54:01, June 13, 2012 CET | From | Popular Party | To | Debating the Labour Law Reform Act |
Message | Unfortunately, the Popular Party cannot support this proposal. We believe this would lead to militant trade unions calling strikes for no reason. We will resist this call which would do serious, lasting damage to our country's economy. Ian Stewart Popular Party Leader |

Message | Yes, being able to strike for one's rights IS a human right and universally recognized as such. Current law makes any striking for any reason a practical impossibility. The GNP obviously has no concern for the freedom of ordinary people, only for the rights of some businessmen to abuse their workers at will. Júlian Simón Minister of Trade and Industry |

Message | "We believe that the best position to take on this is a central one. By that I mean we have to establish a law that will allow the government to evaluate when employers can fire striking employees, and that decision would be made based on specific guidelines that take into account other national laws and human rights as well as employer rights. The government must intervene in situations like this to make sure that all parties involved are treated justly according to national law and the rights that we all share. In this case, we are against the current government position and the proposed resolution and would like the following change: 'Government approval is needed before strikers can be fired.'" -Eleanor Castillo (PAC) |
