MessageThe government should stay out of the internet provision business lest it become the main provider and use its position to carry out censorship or the spread of propaganda. This would not happen under the current administration, of course, but a future government (probably tory) might do just that. By completing wtihdrawing the government from the ISP market we make it a bit more challenging for any government to start abusing influence over the internet and free flow of information.

MessageMr. Speaker,

It's quite the opposite from our perspective.

If the entire internet service is privatized, then individual corporations can take advantage of that to spread their own propaganda. The government represents the democratic power of the people, while corporations only represent the power of a few wealthy men.

They will get even more power if they control the entire island's service. Imagine if most of them supported a coup; they could cut off information flow from certain servers, channels, or small networks, in order to promote whichever faction they support.

Another thing being ignored is the possibility of the nation being held financially hostage.
A government-run ISP would serve schools, hospitals, and other public networks. If all the ISPs are private, taxpayer money would need to be used to pay for internet service at the price chosen by the private sector executives. The private sector's services are based on the expectation of profit, and they would juice as much money as they could. If the government is an ISP, taxpayer money would only go to paying the public sector employees who are responsible for the maintenance of the system.

The private sector would charge clients individually, and we would have to become a client of the private sector to get internet service, and that means a bill for each hospital, school, police station, and every other government-run institution that is connected to a network, whether for the access to a specific database, or general information. What will pay all those bills? Tax-payers' money.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to have an ISP run for purpose instead of profit? And instead of the expenses being based on each institution, it would be a general maintenance expense that would serve the entire network.
