Bill: New Motto, New Solentia
Details
Submitted by[?]: Solentian Socialist Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: October 2152
Description[?]:
The current motto of the Solentian Republic is "Order and Progress". Progress for whom? Order for what purpose? The SSP would like to abandon this national motto, especially as the term "Order" conjures up, to us, images of civil strife and repression. Progress itself is an empty term - without qualification, it may mean drastically opposing things to people of different political views. At the root of the matter, we feel that "Order and Progress" is too arbitrary a term, although of course our views on this may not be shared. However, the SSP offers the replacement, "Liberty and Equality", harkening back to the rallying cry of revolutionary France: "Liberté, égalité, fraternité, ou la mort!" While admittedly somewhat subjective - they do not, after all, form the basis of a political programme as such - as values, liberty and equality are universally recognised by liberal democracies the world over. The pursuit of both is arguably the foundation of modern statehood. People bled in defence of these ideals. We request their sacrifice be remembered now. |

Message | Due to the current state of Parliament, it is impossible for this to be passed, even if the UC, CFAAP, SGJP and OFP fractions all supported it. Without an active NS party, we are unable to secure the two-thirds majority necessary for constitutional amendments. We did, however, want to bring this matter to the foreground of Solentian debate now, should the political balance change sufficiently following the impending parliamentary elections for us to do make a proper "sales pitch". |

Message | Right then, we'll propose this - the SSP *believes* that collectively we have returned a two-thirds majority, necessary to pass constitutional amendments, so here goes. |
