| Message | We need to only have one light machine gun and we should take this opportunity to decide on calibers. The MG-10 is lighter weight in it's 5.56mm configuration but the MG-13 is lighter weight in it's 7.62mm configuration. The MG-10 has a long stroke piston operating system which is theoretically more reliable than the short stroke piston operating system in the MG-13. The MG-10 is limited to fully automatic fire mode while the MG-13 also has a semi-automatic fire mode. The MG-10 and MG-13 both have quick change barrels but the MG-10 has a theoretically quicker barrel change system. The 5.56mm round has been proven inferior to a 6.8mm round. The 5.56mm and 6.8mm rounds both lack the range of the 7.62mm round which poses serious problems in a long range war. The development of a new round with the range of the 7.62mm without the excessive power would not be a viable solution for Cildania. I would propose that we replace all 5.56mm with 6.8mm while research is done into a general purpose cartridge. Alternatively, we could replace all 5.56mm with 7.62 and accept the negative aspects of the heavier round. A 8.59x91.44mm round which is already is use with some snipers has been found suitable for a medium machine gun with the range of a heavy machine gun. This machine gun could replace lighter weight heavy machine guns and some medium machine guns. |
