Bill: Prostitution Review Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Solentian Socialist Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2153

Description[?]:

This is perhaps even more controversial than abortion, but we ask you to keep an open mind.

The SSP supports the establishment of a "State monopoly on prostitution". Now, on a personal note we disapprove of prostitution. In our view, the sex industry in its entirety is inherently exploitative, and we feel those who profit from it are reprehensible. That being said, we see several possible benefits of enacting this legislation, and request that you consider them.

1. It would improve prostitutes' working conditions. By legalising their practise, prostitutes would be covered by health and safety regulations, minimum wage legislation, and even trade union and labour rights (!!!). Crimes against prostitutes (especially rape) could be reported with impunity - and prostitutes' fear of law enforcement would evaporate.

2. We would save prostitutes from virtual slavery by pimps and so on. We would be removing these highly vulnerable individuals from the influence of crime, and organised crime especially. Their "profession" would be regulated, and by creating a State monopoly, we will ensure enscrupulous business interests do not further exploit them for commercial gain.

We have to face facts: prostitution will always exist. It has always existed. Ignoring the problem is irresponsible. Those who consciously choose to work in this industry should be protected as much as possible. Moreover, the SSP realises that many prostitutes are in this line of work due to poverty, coercion, and lack of opportunity. Our move towards an extensive, modern welfare state will help to reduce the number of prostitutes, by turning it into a safer and more consensual line of work.

Random fact: When you join the game, you will find yourself with only zero seats. That's because your party's representatives haven't been elected yet. You need to establish your party's position on issues by proposing several bills that your party wants passed and sending them to vote. This raises your visibility and if you do it enough, you will win seats at the next election.
