| Finds the middle ground preserving both convenience for women, and humane treatment for the unborn child. Allowing abortion throughout the entire course of pregnancy risks an abortion occurring in the third trimester (past the 26th week of pregnancy), after which the fetus's free nerve endings and central nervous system has developed enough that it could, in theory, experience pain. For the sake of humanity, no abortion should be allowed after the second trimester. Simultaneously, preventing any abortion after the first trimester is VERY IMPRACTICAL. While this ensures that a fetus will never experience pain of any sort, many women do not discover they are pregnant until well into the second trimester. Allowing abortion during only the first trimester would prevent many women from obtaining an abortion. Thus, allowing abortion up to the second trimester provides a good safety net for mother's who are either unsure of their financial situation or unaware of their motherhood in the first place, while preventing abortions into the third trimester would prevent inhumane treatment of the fetus. |
