MessageMr. Speaker, there is no difference between the current health care system and the Hon. Member's proposed system except for one difference. The current system requires those that can afford it to pay for it themselves. The proposed system requires, of course, higher taxation, which will be taken from those that can afford to pay. Both ways, the same cohort of the population is forced to cough up. It is essentially the same. However, Mr. Speaker, the nationalisation of healthcare means the removal of competition. It means that doctors may give poorer services, and still be paid the same amount by the government. There is no incentive to give good services, because choice has been artificially limited. The crux of a healthy industry is the free market and competition. Both must exist. If this proposal is successful, Mr. Speaker, neither will.

MessageI thought the DSP despised the posh, snobby, elitist, rich capitalists, yet they want the government to pay for their health care. I guess socialism has its own, very much flawed logic.

MessageMr. Speaker, the health resources of any nations are necessary limited. The question is, how are we to distribute them? According to medical need, or according to the dictates of the capitalist free market? We in our party know what the only moral and humane answer to that question is.

MessageMr. Speaker, we distribute medical resources according to medical need, of course. The free market is a way of ensuring that these needs are catered to at the minimum of cost and the maximum of quality. Those that genuinely cannot pay are supported by the government under current laws.
