Bill: Advertising Standards Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Democratic Socialist Party
Status[?]: defeated

Voting deadline: August 3436
Description[?]:
Dranland needs an Advertising Standards Agency which will tackle irresponsible adverts which peddle grossly misleading claims or use grossly distasteful techniques. It is not okay, for example, to market pole dancing kits to 8 year old girls or make outlandish claims for pharmaceutical products which have no grounding in hard science. Antonio Benandez MP (Leader of the DSP) |

Message | Mr Speaker, first of all, the Hon. Benandez is clearly unaware of the current legislation on false information, which prohibits "grossly misleading claims" and "outlandish claims for pharmaceutical products which have no grounding in hard science". I've also never heard of pole dancing kits for 8 year old kids, and even if they existed, I would trust parents enough to perceive the awkwardness of such a product and not buy them. The only arguments that have no grounding at all in this whole debate are his own. We will not allow political elites to censor advertisements, which are an important part of free speech, because they happen to contradict their puritanical morals. Elina Cadiavera MP Member for Loren Minister for Trade and Industry |

Message | OOC: Dranland has media regulation laws against publishing false information, but I always thought that referred to newspapers, TV stations etc. rather than to advertisers. As for pole dancing kits for children...yep, its happened!!! See: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-412195/Tesco-condemned-selling-pole-dancing-toy.html#axzz2Jrorta1h |

Message | OOC: Who cares what they sell? If it's (relatively) cheap and convenient, I'd buy, even if they sold torture devices to Saddam Hussein. |
