Bill: Homosexuals in the Military Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Gukmindang

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: July 3449

Description[?]:

We have nothing against gays or lesbians, but it is not generally appropriate for them to serve in the army, because homosexuality can disrupt unit solidarity. If they are discrete, then that is less of a problem, but if they are flamboyant about it then it creates problems.

MessageMadam Speaker,
You know the Hon. Mr Han's statement can be repeated and Kyo be substituted for Homosexuals and he would cry discrimination. What is different about this. A discriminated minority has no business calling for the discrimination of other minorities and God only knows how flamboyance damages 'unit solidarity'.

We have nothing against KGP, but it is not generally appropriate for them to serve in the parliament , because insanity and clinically insane can disrupt parliamentary or national sanity. If they are discrete, then that is less of a problem, but if they are flamboyant about it then it creates problems.

MessageMadam Speaker, I do understand the objections to this proposal. Let me emphasise that we oppose discrimination against gays and lesbians in other areas of life. However, let us not forget that serving in battle is a very unique situation. It is highly pressured, and frequently involves servicemen having to live at very close quarters to each other. Think about it seriously, and you will see the obvious potential for problems. It is just not realistic to treat the army like a factory floor or an office.

MessageMadam Speaker,
we oppose discrimination against mentally retarded in other areas of life. However, let us not forget that serving in parliament is a very unique situation. It is highly pressured, and frequently involves congressmen having to negotiate and compromise at very important decision with each other. Think about it seriously, and you will see the obvious potential for problems. It is just not realistic to treat the parliament like a mental floor or an psychiatrıst's office.

MessageMadam Speaker, suggesting that homosexual soldiers lack the professionalism to put their duties as members of their unit before their sexual orientation is discriminating and implies subtle homophobic tendencies at the KGP. One of the most absurd and unfair prejudices against homosexual people is that they show off their sexuality permanently and are thus unable to work with same-sex colleagues in a professional relationship, yet this is exactly what the KGP has built its proposal on. We vehemently oppose promoting unfounded disdain against homosexuals in the military with a policy like this.

MessageMadam Speaker, under our proposal, homosexual soldiers who behave professionally by keeping their sexuality private will not be acted against. We are only targetting a small minority who are blatantly flaboyant and make their fellow soldiers uncomfortable. I appeal to members to consider just what it is like being in the army, living at close quarters with the same soliders 24 hours a day. It is not like working in an office where you come home in the evenings. It just not realistic to impose the norms of civilian life on to military life. The military is very, very different - as anyone who has served in it will tell you.
