Bill: Budget proposal of January 3502

Details

Submitted by[?]: Popular Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill proposes to change the allocation of funds in the budget. It requires more than half of the legislature to vote yes. This bill will pass as soon as the required yes votes are in, or will be defeated if unsufficient votes are reached on the deadline.

Voting deadline: September 3502

Description[?]:

For too long in Dranland, the government has wasted money on vanity projects in areas such as infrastructure and transport and environment and tourism. It is time to re-direct funding to areas where it is most needed, such as education. If our children are to receive the world class education they deserve and require to become productive citizens, more funding will be required. We believe this can be done without increasing the overall budget by making efficiency savings in infrastructure and the environment. These savings will free up vital spending, while not affecting the quality of public services.

MessageMr. Speaker, we are sympathetic to parts of this budget, such as the increased funding for education and overseas aid. However, we strongly reject the cuts, and we also question the principle of reducing public expenditure when Dranland already has a budget surplus. The government ought to start spending the money it has on the services that the people need.

MessageMr Speaker,

cuts during a time of surpluses can of course only be justified if we let tax cuts follow, which I entrust the Finance Minister with. According to the classical liberal idea of equal opportunity, we recognize the legitimacy of increasing spending on education, perhaps in connection with privatizing schools, and will accept the increase in foreign aid as a matter of compromise despite our technical opposition.
